Board Training in British Columbia

For non-profits, cooperatives, and school boards that need governance they can trust

Whether your board is brand new, has been struggling for years, or is simply ready to take governance more seriously, we’re here to help.

Strong boards don’t happen by accident. Without training, well-meaning directors routinely blur the line between governance and management, misunderstand their legal duties under the BC Societies Act, and leave executive directors managing the board instead of running the organization.

We help boards across British Columbia get clear, get compliant, and get to work.

Is your board struggling with any of these?

  • New directors who don’t know what their role actually is — or what they’re legally liable for
  • Board members micromanaging staff instead of setting strategy
  • Meetings that are long, unfocused, and produce little
  • Uncertainty about BC Societies Act requirements, AGMs, and bylaw compliance
  • Tension between the board and the executive director
  • Directors who are disengaged, absent, or holding the organization back

You’re not alone. These are the most common challenges facing boards in BC — and they’re all fixable with the right training.

What our board training covers

Our facilitated training for BC non-profits, cooperatives, and school boards addresses the issues boards actually face:

Governance fundamentals — The board’s role in a healthy governance system, fiduciary duties, and how governance differs from management. We use plain language, not jargon.

BC Societies Act compliance — What directors need to know about their obligations under BC law: annual reports, AGM rules, bylaw amendments, and the personal liability exposure that comes with directorship.

Board-executive director relationship — Where governance ends and management begins. We help boards and EDs establish clear boundaries so the organization runs smoothly and leadership stays intact.

Decision-making and oversight — How to make better decisions as a group, provide real financial and programmatic oversight, and hold the organization — and each other — accountable.

Board culture and engagement — What makes a board high-functioning. How to recruit, onboard, and retain committed directors. How to run meetings that people actually want to attend.

Strategic thinking — How to shift from reactive problem-solving to genuine long-term leadership.

Who we train

  • Registered BC societies and non-profit organizations of all sizes
  • Cooperatives operating under BC cooperative legislation
  • School district boards across British Columbia
  • Organizations in transition — new boards, leadership changes, governance reviews

Training is customized for your organization’s size, sector, and maturity level. We don’t run generic workshops; every session is built around your actual governance situation.

How training works

We offer facilitated full-board training, board retreat facilitation, and new director orientation — delivered in person at your location across BC, or online. Sessions typically run from a half-day to two days depending on scope.

After an initial discovery conversation, we design an agenda tailored to your board’s most pressing challenges, your sector’s regulatory context, and your organization’s stage of development.

What boards say

Frequently asked questions

Do you train boards outside the Lower Mainland?

Yes. We work with organizations throughout British Columbia, including rural and remote communities. Online delivery is available for organizations where travel isn’t practical.

How long does a typical training session take?

Most boards choose a half-day or full-day format. New board orientations can be completed in two to three hours. Multi-session governance development programs are also available for boards that want sustained improvement over time.

Do you address the BC Societies Act specifically?

Yes. For non-profit societies, we ground all governance training in the requirements and obligations of the BC Societies Act, including director duties, annual filing requirements, and AGM rules.

Can you work with both the board and the executive director together?

Absolutely — and we recommend it. The board-ED relationship is one of the most common sources of governance breakdown. Joint sessions that clarify roles and rebuild trust are among the most impactful work we do.

Is training tax-deductible for our non-profit?

Professional development and governance training are typically an eligible organizational expense. We recommend confirming with your accountant or financial officer.

What makes your training different from self-directed online courses?

Facilitated training is interactive. Your board can ask questions in real time, work through your actual challenges, and build shared understanding together — something a self-directed module can’t provide. Governance change happens in rooms, not in individual browser sessions.
